I'm Dan Logar, Area Manager for Met-Ed, a First Energy Company, and Campaign Chair for the 2008 United Way of Lebanon County Campaign.

You might wonder how someone like me becomes the United Way Campaign Chair. One hot and humid day last August, when I was just sitting down to eat lunch, I received a call from someone asking me if I would be willing to chair the 2008 United Way Campaign.

My brain was affected by the heat and humidity, and I said that I would.

Then as the day went on, I began to think … what did I agree to? We've been hovering around the $2,000,000 mark for several years. How did I think we could raise more money than that?

Although the Lebanon Valley has not been hit as severely as other areas by the recent financial meltdown, we are all feeling the pinch of high prices and financial uncertainties. But, there are some in our community who may have lost their jobs, are faced with uninsured medical bills, family crises, or are just getting by, these economic challenges have been devastating. These could be your friends or neighbors.

That is when I knew why I really agreed to chair the United Way campaign.

At some time in our lives each of us has needed help. It might have just been a kind word or some good advice. Or it might have been real, concrete help to take care of a serious problem.

That is what United Way does. We provide supportive counseling, help kids grow up healthy and provide real solutions to real needs. By giving to United Way and encouraging others to give, we are keeping vital programs and services alive in this community.

At the same time, United Way creates opportunities, by focusing on the building blocks for a good life: Education, Financial Stability and Health.

Our campaign theme this year is LIVE UNITED.

What does LIVE UNITED mean?
It means: Joining hands, Opening our hearts, Lending our muscle, Finding our voices.
It means giving 10%, giving 100%, giving 110%,
giving an hour, a Saturday, thinking of WE before ME.

Because, when we reach out a hand to ONE, we influence the condition of ALL.

I invite each of you to join me and do whatever you can: advocate, volunteer, give. Let's not disappoint our friends and neighbors who are experiencing difficult times and see, if together, we can find a way to help by contributing to the United Way.

Each of us doing our part, that's what it means to LIVE UNITED.

> Campaign Updates

The United Way of Lebanon County began our 2008 Campaign on September 3, 2008 with a campaign goal of $2,050,000.

In the past three months, Lebanon County's community has come together to raise this money that will benefit so many agencies and people. Although, as of our last report meeting on December 18th, we are only at 71% of our goal, we are still proud of what our community has accomplished so far. With the economy suffering, many people are facing financial troubles... but the hard times are always the hardest for those who are already suffering.

There is still time to raise the money that will help our community, and many inspirational stories about what our community has done so far...

>United Way to Say Goodbye to Board Member

It is hard to say goodbye to a caring, intelligent and outstanding volunteer like Andy Marhevsky.

Andy, who served as a United Way of Lebanon County Board member for 8 years, resigned recently because of a planned move to North Carolina in mid-2009. He is retired from Fulton Bank.

Exemplifying the "Live United" theme, Andy spent countless hours volunteering in key roles for our United Way. He served as Campaign Chair in 2004 and Board President in 2006. For the past two years, he chaired the Community Needs Impact Grants Panel. He guided our United Way through its evaluation of the results from United Way of America's Standards of Excellence Self Assessment and served on

the Strategic Plan Task Group. In addition, Andy served on the Executive, Admissions, Endowment, and Communications committees, as well as the Campaign Cabinet.

The very best wishes to Andy and his wife, Connie, as they head south. He will be missed.

> TAXES

Each year millions of dollars in tax credits go unclaimed by tax payers. The United Way of Lebanon County is working to make sure that working families and individuals increase their income by receiving the money that they deserve.

This year the United Way will be working with two Volunteer Tax Assistance Sites in Lebanon County. VITA sites, staffed entirely by volunteers, file returns for working families eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other credits.
Lebanon Valley College will be having its second year of running a VITA site on campus. Last year, the LVC site processed 90 electronic tax returns and over 100 paper returns. Thanks to this program, more than $50,000 dollars just in electronically filed returns went directly back to Lebanon County residents.
This year marks the first year that the United Way will be working with the Lebanon County Community Action Partnership (CAP) and the American Red Cross RSVP are developing a site to be located at the Democratic Offices at 23 South Sixth Street in Lebanon.

Anyone interested in volunteering at one of the tax preparation sites, as a preparer, greeter or interpreter is asked to contact the United Way offices at 717.273.8144 or by emailing rgayhart@unitedwaylebco.org. Tax preparers do not need to have any previous tax experience. This is a way to "Live United".

Could someone you know use an extra 700 dollars this winter?

According to the The Pennsylvania Weatherization Assistance Program a family can save up to $740 just by sealing off, or weatherizing, the windows in their home.

Thanks to the Governor's Office, the Lebanon County United Way now has over 50 weatherization kits. Each individual kit can seal up to 9 windows. The kits contain tape and a clear shrink film plastic.

The kits are easy to apply and require only a pair of scissors and a hair dryer. The kits are available to groups who are willing to volunteer their time to install these kits and to low to middle income residents of Lebanon County.

To arrange to pick up kits, please call or email:
